storytagger

mobile app

Storytagger is a tool and a learning platform all in one. The target group are companies that seek to improve the way they pass down knowledge inside their departments. The app helps you from the start: it teaches you how to write prompts, structure your story and prepare for your video. Then comes the filming process where the user is guided, with a timer and helpful tips. When your story is ready, you can share it on a platform where only your company has access!

the project

The client already had a strong vision and the app was already on the market when we started collaborating. Storytagger was not doing well - few companies had adopted it and users reported that the app was not helpful. The UX process was reviewed and we created user flows to understand the journey a user undertakes when creating a video. The UI was revamped as well, while at the same time keeping elements from the initial designs, thus updating them without confusing existing users.

safe access

Each organization has it's own platform inside Storytagger - safe and simple access was an important step.

bite-sized tasks

We know speaking in front of a camera is though. Storytagger breaks down the structure of a video and provides users with templates - each section has between 30 sec to 2 min.

guided experience

When a user starts recording we won't say Action! until the head is in the right position. This way we ensure the user stays within the frame and understand the right way to record.

focus on the notes

When telling their stories we want users to focus on what's important - their notes and the time they've got left, so we minimized the camera view

improve instantly

Storrytagger gives you real time feedback. The app tracks your eye movement, framing, the brightness of your background and voice clarity

my role

lead UX designer

  • Research user behavior related to recording videos and public speaking

  • Map out the existing app and understands where it fails

  • Chart a new user flow and push for a minimalistic approach.

  • Test the app in parallel - the old approach vs the new one

  • Design the UX and create the recording animation

  • Work closely with a Junior UI Designer for the UI revamp.

  • Create prototypes to test and observe

  • Work with developers to make sure the implementation fits with the vision.

challenges

Storytelling is challenging and we needed to find a way to make it easy and accessible. The challenge came from taking an existing product and transforming it, innovating the way people generally think about recording videos and putting it all in a simple, guided experience.

what i learned

My takeaway from this project is in itself the approach we took. We looked at how people speak, what their mistakes are and how to help them. And then we ditched the common way of filming, the usual UI of a recording screen in favor or something new, more helpful.
